With the „Winnovation 2025“ strategy Wagner Group launched an initiative to empower quicker and more sustainable global growth in early 2016. In this time of transformation, Hong Liu joined our Chinese regional office in Shanghai in the role of Director HR China of Wagner Spraytech (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. The fundamental benefit of Qianlead’s language is its concreteness: clearly understanding what we are talking about and how to implement it in my personal situation.
Her main responsibilities were to build up a dedicated HR department, develop and implement HR strategies and processes in line with global needs, and recruit qualified managers and experts for positions essential to the future success of Wagner in one of its key markets.
I was impressed by how she managed in less than a month to understand our company, but also be recognised and respected by her peers as a professional expert and a trustworthy partner at the same time. This became obvious already when she first visited headquarters in Germany for her introduction into the company and already brought up a number of topics including legal risks that had not been identified or properly addressed.
In a very short time, she built up clear processes, worked off the backlog and created a structured and transparent HR infrastructure for the region, shaping a professional and efficient HR administration for our Shanghai office.
Working closely together with the expatriate legal representative of the Chinese branch, she delivered invaluable advice and insights to the board of directors, thus driving the decision making process in a challenging organizational setup. Together with top management, she identified obstacles to smooth collaboration between Europe and China, and proposed solutions based on her expert knowledge and practical experience that more often than not would be implemented later.
Very quickly Hong identified leadership competence as a key topic to make the Winnovations strategy work in China: overcoming the discrepancy between company values and managers’ competences would be the most important factor to align and energise our staff. So after a thorough analysis, she kicked off a leadership development programme, starting with a workshop she gave by herself to bring associates and managers on board and followed up by series of leadership training she developed together with the external supplier. Already today the first touchable improvements can be observed in the daily work of our managers.
Hong was also key to filling strategic positions situated in Shanghai, China and other Asian countries. Already within the first two months, she had hired amongst others one Sales Director, the Head of Strategic Purchasing, the Sales Manager in Xi’An, and the Business Development Manager for South East Asia in Vietnam. Her recruiting skills are impressive: from the definition of the Job and collaboration with the recruiters to reading the candidates in their curricula vitae and the interviews, she succeeded in making the selection process look easy and effortless, letting us see only qualified and motivated candidates in the final interview stage.
Hong Liu is leaving Wagner out of her own wish to develop her career further in a different market: we will miss her logical and strategic approach, her deep knowledge and her passion in the company, and we wish her all the best in her new projects in Italy.
